Feedback from the Center for the study of social change

January 17, 2008

Dr S. A. Mehta
President
Greater Mumbai Unit
Indian Scout & Guide Fellowship

Dear Dr Mehta Saheb,

I am happy to send you the following report of utilization of four sewing machines so kindly donated by your organisation to Centre for the Study of Social Change, Bandra East, Mumbai on June 15, 2008.

Your members will be glad to know that all the machines are in full use, two at our Vocational Training Centre and two at the homes of two women in Bandra and Khar East slums.

Our women's vocational centre headed by Mrs Prachi Parab has completed one course of six months of tailoring for 15 women successfully. They are doing work from home and gradually settling in their own eployment. 7 of them have their own machines and 8 are working on borrowed machines on time sharing basis.

New class of 14 women every day has started from January 2009 for which two of these machines are fully under use between 1.00pm to 4.00 pm six days a week. The machines are used for training as well as preparing saleable samplse to be displayed and sold at "Adhar Kendra" a women support activity being launched by Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai at Vile Parle East by the end of this month.

We are also in ouch with the management of Big Bazaar who are sending their marketing team on Wednesday, January 21, 2009 at 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm to our centre where various items including clothes made by members of our vocational unit and bachat gats will display their creations. we hope to take this initiative forward from there.

Mrs Vijaya Shelar & Chandrakala Salunkhe, who live in the slums of Khar and Bandra East respectively are self-employed. Vijaya had a business of Fall-beeding of sarees earlier also. Her business and earnings have increased by about 40% after she had her own machine donated by you. Chadrakala has started work after receiving the machine and she is also improving in her work.

Inspired by the above examples, we have received requests from many women from slums for similar help. We have done the preliminary screening and identified two women who deserve such help and who can be monitored by us to ensure appropriate utilization of machines, if received in donation. If any of your members wish to donate these two or more machines, we shall be extremely grateful.

We request you to advise your members to visit CSSC on any of the above days at the timings given so that they can have the pleasure of watching how their contribution to the society is fruitfully utilized.

With best wishes for the new year,

Your Sincerely,

sd/-
